Description

The new Skilled Migrant Category visa – what employers need to know

The EMA has consistently advocated for immigration settings that better reflect the realities of New Zealand’s labour market, particularly the need to attract and retain skilled workers in critical occupations.

The Government’s new Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) visa, launching on 24 August, introduces a simplified residency pathway that improves access for experienced workers and tradespeople and helps employers retain the talent they need to grow.

Over time, these changes should support greater workforce stability, lift productivity and strengthen New Zealand’s ability to compete for global talent.

Ahead of the visa launch, we're hosting a practical webinar on 12 August to unpack the new settings, explain what they mean for your business, and give you the opportunity to put your questions directly to immigration experts and Immigration New Zealand officials.

You’ll hear from Hash Bihan and Tom Zhou from New Zealand Immigration Partners, alongside officials from Immigration New Zealand, who will cover key areas including:

Understanding the SMC residency pathway

  • The current policy settings - points, income thresholds, and role requirements
  • Who is eligible, and the key criteria for employers and applicants
  • How to apply, and what the process looks like in practice
  • Pointers on avoiding common application pitfalls

The live Q&A session with Immigration New Zealand and New Zealand Immigration Partners will give you the chance to raise specific scenarios and questions relevant to your business.
